Marco Asensio scored the only goal of the game at the Butarque in the solitary Copa del Rey quarter final on Thursday night as Real Madrid defeated Leganes to take a slender lead into the second leg at the Bernabeu next week.
Theo Hernandez crossed from the right and Asensio was quickest to nip in to flick the ball high into the net past Nereo Champagne at his front post in the 89th minute to give Los Blancos a first leg win.
Real had dominated the first half without creating many chances but they had a glorious opportunity which fell the way of Mateo Kovacic. The young Croatian stole the ball off of the Leganes back four and with the chance to slot the ball past Champagne but he instead managed to fire wide and it remained level at the break.
The hosts were the first to threaten in the second half as they almost took the lead. Although it was a Real Madrid player who nearly put into his own net, Marcos Llorente heading a free kick off his own crossbar.
Lucas Vazquez then saw his shot saved by the goalkeeper as Real pressed for the opener before they finally broke the deadlock with just a minute of normal time remaining thanks to Asensio’s finish.
The second leg takes place at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night.
