Athletic Club keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has agreed a new seven-year deal with the club, despite being linked with Real Madrid.
The young Basque keeper has been heavily linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu and did undergo a medical at the Madrid based club in the hope of completing a January switch.
However, Madrid’s patience in their negotiations and a contract offer from Athletic, has now seen him change his mind and remain at the new San Mames.
With his contract set to expire in June; a cut price deal to Madrid this month was heavily reported, but his new deal now means any interested parties will have to spend in the region of €80m, which is said to be his new and improved release clause.
The 23-year-old has rose to stardom in La Liga after some stunning performances for both Athletic and for the Spanish national side at U21 level and for the senior side, making one cap.
His deal follows back-up keeper Iago Herrerin and Inaki Williams, who have both put pen-to-paper on new deals in the last few days.
It is now expected that Madrid will turn their attentions back to Manchester United keeper David De Gea, with the reigning La Liga holders keen to replace current number Keylor Navas.
