Athletic Club have selected two back-up options if Aymeric Laporte leaves for Manchester City, according to Mundo Deportivo.
City boss Pep Guardiola is keen to improve his defensive options ahead of what looks to be a successful Premier League title and potential Champions League run.
The English side sit comfortably at the top of the La Liga standings but Guardiola wants to add strength and depth in his options, having relied heavily on John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi this season so far.
It is understood that after tentative talks and contact between the two clubs over Laporte’s transfer fee; the English club are just hours away from submitting an offer which would trigger his release clause, set in the region of £60m.
Athletic Club have been busy of late, renewing a number of players’ contracts, including young keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who was close to joining Real Madrid earlier this month after having a medical.
Laporte’s potential exit has now seen the Basque club select two options – Inigo Martinez of Real Sociedad and Arsenal’s Nacho Monreal.
The likelihood of signing Martinez from their Basque rivals is highly unlikely, whilst Monreal’s current form for the English side will see Arsene Wenger do everything he can to hold off interest.
