As reported by both ABC de Sevilla and Cadena Ser, Real Betis have made significant moves to sign Miguel Layun. The Mexican international is currently playing with Porto in Liga NOS. Reports say the deal may be completed this week.
Liverpool seemingly having an agreement in place with Real Betis’ current left back Riza Durmisi. Should that move come to pass, Betis would be looking for an adequate replacement. With Alin Tosca not being of the required standard, a move for Layun makes sense for Betis.
The 29 year old has been out of favour with Porto this season. Having made 13 appearances in all competitions for the Portuguese club, Layun has only started five. He has been left out of the squad entirely three more than he has played in the league this season. Even in the games he has played, it has been in an unfavoured position at right back.
This has been a dramatic change from two years ago where he contributed 15 assists and five goals from 27 league appearances. Quique Setien will be hoping for more of the same from the Mexican and should fit into his style of play seamlessly.
While Alaves, Celta Vigo and Deportivo La Coruna have all been credited with interest, Betis are top of the queue for the former Granada man. The deal itself is believed to be an initial loan with a compulsory purchase of €5 million included.
With less than a week remaining in this current transfer window, a lot can happen. Should Liverpool step up their interest in Durmisi, this move for Layun will equally step up. As things stand however, it does appear that neither player will be moving until the summer at least. With Mexico involved in the World Cup this summer, Layun will be looking to secure regular football .
