Ronaldo focusing on Champions League titleJanuary 26, 2018
Leganes made it to their first ever Copa del Rey semi final as they stunned Real Madrid at the Bernabeu and Cristiano Ronaldo has said he is now focusing on winning Champions League title.
Marco Asensio’s late goal in the first leg had given Los Blancos the advantage heading into the second leg across the city with Real widely tipped to complete the job at home.
However it was the visitors who stunned the home fans by taking the lead towards the end of the first half. Achraf Hakimi’s ball into Nacho Fernandez was poor causing the centre back to slip and allowing Javier Eraso onto the ball with space to run into but instead the midfielder took aim from 25 yards bending a fantastic effort into the top left corner of Kiko Casilla’s goal.
Real needed a strong start to the second half and got just that within two minutes of the restart. Karim Benzema collected the ball on the right edge of the box and dinked the ball beautifully over Nereo Champagne into the corner.
Lega however weren’t awed and took just eight minutes to move back in front when Gabriel Pires bulleted home a header from a corner into the roof of the net.
Champagne denied Benzema from point blank range followed by another world class save to tip a Sergio Ramos header over the bar as Real threw everything at Los Pepineros in search of an equaliser to send them through but in the end the shock of the round was complete as Leganes’ dream run in the tournament continued.
“If we can win the Champions League, then it will be an incredible year for us,” Ronaldo told Chinese football outlet Dongqiudi.
“The team have not started strongly in the league and we are all disappointed, nobody is happy, but we most now work hard for the Champions League as it’s a very important trophy for us.
“Of course it will be very difficult in La Liga but we cannot surrender at this point and try to eliminate dropping any more points, all we can do is keep working hard.”
Real Madrid now prepare to face Valencia on Saturday afternoon in a game which could see Zidane put under further pressure.
