Villarreal scored four first half goals to secure all three points against Real Sociedad on Saturday afternoon.
Victor Ruiz gave the home side the lead after just five minutes, before quick goals from Pablo Fornals and Carlos Bacca either side of the twenty minute mark put Javi Calleja’s side 3-0 to the good.
Diego Llorente got the visitors back into the game, but Samu Castillejo’s goal just after the hour mark put the game to bed.
William Jose gave Sociedad something to grab onto in the second half, but the home side held put for the win and kept their grip on fifth place for another week.
Elsewhere, Getafe left it late to earn a point with Sevilla, sending the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan into turmoil after a moment of drama.
Vincenzo Montella’s side have been slightly improving and they had thought all three points were sealed after Luis Muriel’s opener on Sunday afternoon but a moment of drama halted celebrations.
Through to the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey thanks to a win over Atletico Madrid, Montella’s side have seen their fortunes change and it was Muriel who sent the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan into raptures on the 73rd minute.
Getafe, who have impressed this season were not to give up though and a late cross which was fumbled by keeper Sergio Rico saw Angel Rodriguez hammer home into an empty net.
The result leaves Montella’ side sixth, four points behind Villarreal, whilst Getafe sit in a respectable ninth place.
