Lionel Messi scored a superb free-kick to save Barcelona’s unbeaten league record, beating Alaves 2-1 on Sunday evening.
Former Manchester City forward John Guidetti has made quite the impression for Alaves since arriving on a six month loan from La Liga rivals Celta Vigo and it was his goal inside the opening 45 minutes that made Barca work hard for their three points.
Guidetti found space after a good counter attack and his effort wrong footed Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who had previously denied the Swedish striker.
Barca, who had 73% possession after the first 45 minutes, found chances hard to come by and were left largely frustrated.
But a second half display saw them battle for three points and secure them thanks to goals from Luis Suarez and Messi.
Andres Iniesta was integral to Barca’s comeback and it was his good work which saw the Catalan side get back on level terms, supplying a cross for Suarez, who hammered from a volley from inside the area.
Messi, who had an earlier free-kick denied, was not to be stopped late on, as his delightful effort gave the league leaders all three points.
Ernesto Valverde’s side now sit 11 points clear of second place Atletico Madrid, who beat Las Palmas 3-0 earlier on Sunday, whilst Alaves sit 17th in the La Liga standings.
