Real Sociedad defender Inigo Martinez has accepted the offer from Bilbao who will be activating his release clause to make him the most expensive signing in the club’s history.
The signing of the Spanish International defender is expected to be made official as soon as today as the defender gave his green light to sign for Athletic Bilbao at a very early stage of the negotiations.
Athletic will be activating Iñigo’s release clause which amount to €32 Million to replace French defender Aymeric Laporte who is set to sign for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City after the English club activated the Frenchman’s release clause which equalled €65 Million.
The 26 year old defender’s recently signed contract with Real Sociedad saw his release clause being lowered from €40 Miollion to €32 and will be further reduced in the summer of 2019 to €25 Million.
Martinez who will have his salary doubled to €5 Million per year is set to become Athletic’s most expensive signing in the club’s history and has also attracted the interest of Manchester City themselves over the past few months and has also attracted top clubs such as Barcelona and Juventus.
Athletic currently sit in 12th place in the league and currently preparing to face Spartak Moscow in the next round of the Europa League.
