La Liga January Transfer Window Round Up

With the January transfer window coming to a close on Wednesday with some fantastic signings for some of the 20 La Liga clubs with many players departing as well. I take a closer look at what has happened in the past month.

The biggest deal of the window was of course Philippe Coutinho’s long awaited move from Liverpool to Barcelona with the Brazilian joining for 120 million euros.

Coutinho was one of two players to sign on at the Camp Nou with defender Yerry Mina joining from Palmeiras for 11.8 million euros bringing the total spending at Barca to 131.8 million euros with the Catalans being the highest spenders in the league, with almost double the amount of money spent as the second highest team in Atletico Madrid who spent 66 million euros.

Atleti’s spending consisted of two players of their own with Diego Costa returning to the club from Chelsea as well as a deal that saw Vitolo move to the Wanda Metopolitano from Sevilla via Las Palmas.

Perhaps surprisingly, Real Madrid were the only team who didn’t participate in the transfer market with not one player joining or leaving the Bernabeu club.

Athletic Bilbao and Valencia were also big spenders in the window with those two spending 46 million euros combined. Athletic only made one signing but it was a big one with defender Inigo Martinez joining from local rivals Real Sociedad right at the end of the window. Valencia saw Francis Coquelin join the club from Arsenal with Luciano Vietto signing on loan from Atletico Madrid.

Bottom two clubs Malaga and Las Palmas were the busiest two clubs with numerous incomings and outgoings in the window.

The January window also saw 11 ex-La Liga players return to the Spanish top flight either on loan or on a permanent deal, Diego Costa, Philippe Coutinho, Coke, Manuel Iturra, Ruben Rochina, Isaac Success, Marc Bartra, Hector Moreno, Roque Mesa, Sandro Ramirez and Carlos Sanchez all heading back to La Liga.

In total the 20 La Liga clubs combined spent 277,100,000 euros in the window with over 50 players either moving to La Liga or joining from another Primera club.
