Iago Aspas scored a late penalty for Celta Vigo, but it wasn’t enough as Alaves proved worthy winners in a 2-1 win.
Visitors Celta may have completely dominated the ball at the Estadio Mendizorroza but they ended up on the losing side after a resilient home performance.
The Basque side scored both of their goals early on as the busty Alfonso Pedraza found space at the back post and forced the opener in the fourth minute.
Ibai Gomez crossed for former Barcelona forward Munir El Haddadi, who would give the home side a 2-0 lead after just 18 minutes.
Having gone 2-0 up, the home side sat back and allowed the visitors the chance to get back in the game, but keeper Fernando Pacheco was proving a tough customer to beat.
Iago Aspas was a constant threat and his wonderful backheel on the 84th minute almost saw the visitors score, but Pacheco denied the in-form Spanish striker.
Aspas had another chance moments later after an excellent solo effort and got themselves back in the game, but it proved too little too late.
Alaves move onto 22 points now after the victory, whilst Celta missed the chance to move above Sevilla and sit in 8th place.
