Angel Correa scored a stunner as Atletico Madrid beat Valencia 1-0 at Wanda Metropolitano.
With Barcelona drawing 1-1 with Espanyol earlier on Sunday, Diego Simeone’s men had a chance to reduce the gap at the top of the table, if only by a little bit.
Valencia, who sit above Real Madrid in the La Liga standings saw Zinedine Zidane’s men struggle, being held by Levante; and they knew a win for them would them hold off the reigning champions for one more round.
The home side started well and it was Saul Niguez who almost opened the scoring as early as the 11th minute, but his 35-yard shot went high and wide of the Valencia goal.
The lively midfielder then tried again from the edge of the box, but Brazilian keeper Neto was providing a stubborn back line for the visitors.
Antoine Griezmann then saw an effort come close, before Diego Godin came close with a header but the defender would pay for his efforts.
The Uruguayan was forced off after a collision with Neto, losing a tooth in the process.
With half an hour to go, Atleti found their all important breakthrough as Correa created space, before thundering home a superb 22-yard effort past the Brazilian keeper.
A late chance for Carlos Soler almost saw the game end 1-1 but Jan Oblak stopped any chance of that happening.
