ESPN pundit Craig Burley believes Manchester United are still wanting to sign Gareth Bale from Real Madrid this summer.
United’s long term interest in the Welsh international stems back to when he played for Tottenham Hotspur, but their chances of making a summer move had seemingly died down after boss Jose Mourinho said he was happy with his current squad.
United are struggling to keep pace with Premier League leaders Manchester City and it is understood that Mourinho will be handed further funds to bolster his options ahead of next season.
Bale, who has been a bit part player of late for Madrid due to constant injuries – has been linked with a summer exit.
Madrid president Florentino Perez is growing increasingly worried over the form and chances of no silverware this season at the Santiago Bernabeu and wants to make a number of significant changes to his squad for next season.
Despite Mourinho’s claims that he does not want to sign Bale, former Scotland international Burley, who works for ESPN has claimed otherwise.
“He will look to strengthen defensively but if that player comes up, i.e. if Gareth Bale comes available, I’m sure United will be pitching for a Gareth Bale, ” Burley said.
Time will tell if former Spurs winger Bale will become available, whilst other forwards at Madrid such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema have seen their futures questioned.
