Maxi Gomez scored an impressive double as Celta Vigo were held at home by Espanyol 2-2 on Sunday afternoon at Balaidos.
Despite dominating the game, Celta failed to see put the match and allowed the visitors to get themselves an impressive point.
Gomez, who almost left the Galician club for China in January; has been in superb form this season and his leveller following Leo Baptistao’s opener proved vital for the home side.
Gomez was at the centre of everything good – Celta did during the game, and he gave them the lead 10 minutes from full-time after pouncing on a loose ball inside the six yard box.
The home side failed to hold on to their lead, however, as Gerard Moreno punished them with a superb effort late on.
The results leaves Celta four points off the Europa League places, whilst Espanyol are eight points clear of the relegation places.
Meanwhile, Barcelona laboured through a 0-0 with Getafe on Sunday afternoon to approach a rare midweek break, sitting pretty at the top of La Liga.
Ernesto Valverde’s side failed to score for the first time at home this season with the result, having been largely frustrated by Jose Bordalas’ impressive visitors.
Whilst Valverde’s side remain unbeaten in the league, they did allow Atletico Madrid in second place, to gain ground in the title race, cutting the gap down to seven points.
