As Real Madrid face PSG on Valentine’s Night in the Round of 16 in the Champions League, we look through the Los Blancos archives to explore their history against French sides in Europe.
Advantage – Real Madrid
The Champions League, as we know it know, favours Los Blancos in this fixture. They met in the 2015/2016 season during the group stages, both times, Real Madrid kept a clean sheet, beating the French side 1-0 at the Bernabeu, before a 0-0 draw in the French capital.
This time though, PSG will have different personnel with the likes of Neymar, Cavani and MBappé leading the line, and Dani Alves, Meunier and Kurzawa at the back, they’ll definitely feel like they will have a chance, although Real Madrid will hold the psychological advantage.
Real Madrid enjoy a trip to France…
Real Madrid were eliminated by Olympique Lyonnais in the 2009/2010, when Lyon’s 1-0 home victory at the Stade Gerland, was then followed by a 1-1 draw on the night at the Bernabeu with goals from Ronaldo and Miralem Pjanic, the French side qualified and the Spaniards were out of the competition. But since then, it seems that Madrid have recovered against the French, as Los Blancos have faced French sides on 12 occasions, winning on 11 of those occasions, the only exception being the 0-0 draw against PSG in 2015/2016.
Can PSG handle the heat?
It was a game that everyone can probably remember where they were, what they were drinking seeing how it was probably the Champions League game of the century, definitely one of the best comebacks in history. PSG seemed to have left Barcelona in the dirt after a 4-0 victory at the Parc Des Princes. But, it’s never over until it’s over as they say, and a 6-1 victory at the Nou Camp with a last kick of the game goal from Sergi Roberto.
Since then, PSG and Unai Emery will have that in the back of their minds and nerves may play a part in this fixture. On the other side too, Zidane will know this, and his side will be motivated until the very end.
