When it comes to academy players few teams produce better players than Barcelona. Barça has the likes of Gerard Pique, Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi (just to name a few) who have come through the ranks to become a first-team regular. The latest player who in a few years time is set to break into the first-team is Dutch under 13s star Xavi Simons.
It may seem early to even think of putting him in the same category as those aforementioned players. But the quality of Simons is apparent and he is already being compared to his namesake Xavi.
Simons has been the captain of his side ever since he stepped onto the field. He set the academy alight with his talents and skills. It’s clear to see why there is so much hype as he looks like he’s playing at levels too easy for him.
Teams like Chelsea, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have all shown an interest in him whilst at Barcelona. But, it seems, at least for the foreseeable future, that he will be staying at the Nou Camp to continue his development.
Last season, Xavi Simons’ team scored 164 goals and won all of 25 games. They conceded just 14 goals, thereby cementing their stature as one of the most gifted teams in La Masia’s history. Simons also won his fourth youth Ballon D’or in a row.
With many years of growth as a player yet to come, it will be exciting to see what Simons will become by the time he will be old enough to play for the first-team.
