Atletico Madrid are reported to have found their replacement for out-going star player, Antoine Griezmann in the form of RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner, according to reports circulating in Germany.
The Madrid giants have supposedly entered the race to sign the hotshot forward when they sent scouts to watch him last weekend. The 21-year old is also set to be on the radar of Premier League giants Liverpool and Chelsea and arch-rivals Real Madrid.
Los Rojiblancos see Werner as the prime target to replace Barcelona-bound Griezmann after a stellar 18 months which currently sees him notch fourteen goals to his tally already this season in all competitions.
The 21-year old striker is known for his predatory acumen which has seen him score a goal every two games thus far this season, and 35 goals in 60 matches for the club since joining from Stuttgart back in 2016. His instinctual attacking play has seen him register 54% of his shots on target whilst also winning 37% of his aerial duels.
However, if Diego Simeone’s side are to lure Werner to the Wanda Metropolitano, they will need to prevent Leipzig tying him down to a new long-term contract.
Leipzig sporting director Ralf Rangnick told ESPN that they would reject any bids for the talismanic striker and that “Timo knows in any case that he right now, and also next season, plays for us. We are already in talks to adjust and extend his contract.”
Werner’s current contract with Die Bullen runs until the summer of 2020, and along with the interest for his services this summer could be a huge deal for the future of Timo Werner.
