Girona enjoyed a thumping 3-0 win at the Montilivi to put them within two points of European football next season. The Catalans had several thrilling chances before getting the breakthrough with a Stuani penalty and goals from Portu and Juanpe.

An outrageous hand from Martin Mantovani gifted a penalty to the home side in the 23rd minute. The Argentine literally had his hand above his head to reach the ball, making it an obvious decision for the referee. Cristhian Stuani was only too happy to convert from the spot.

Roughly ten minutes later, Girona made it 2-0 with a long ball to Portu in the center of the pitch. The Spaniard made a striding run forward, with none of the three Leganes players surrounding him able to get close enough to challenge. Portu’s powerful shot into the top of the goal but the game almost out of Leganes’ reach.

A late goal near the end of the match then sealed the deal for the Catalans. Their free-kick from the left was converted by an airbourne Juanpe with the ball bouncing into the left-hand side of the goal.

Girona attacking midfielder Eloi Amagat finally made his Primera Division debut, he said:

“Lately, I have dreamed many times of this moment. When things are difficult and in the end you manage to achieve them, they taste even better.”

Eloi is the only player in the history of Girona to play in the Tercera Division, Segunda B, Segunda, and Primera Division. After he match he said,

“I hope that I am the only one, it will be a good sign.”

After the match, Girona coach Pablo Machin said,

“We are continuing with the idea of getting a little over 40 points. Then we will see if the prince gets the princess.”

Leganes coach Asier Garitano said,

“It was a match where Girona has been better than us and the victory has been overwhelming.”

Both sides now face a difficult week ahead. Leganes prepares to welcome Real Madrid at home on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Girona has a much anticipated week culminating in a trip to Camp Nou next Saturday. Barcelona will have a mid-week Champions League match against Chelsea, so expect the Whites and Reds to throw everything at Barça in search of a famous win.
