Barcelona defender Gerard Pique is to be handed a rest by boss Ernesto Valverde as the club’s chances of a treble are beginning to take shape.
The busy past couple of months now approaches for Barca, who are set for a possible treble, having reached the Copa del Rey final, become favourites to win the Champions League and the La Liga title, where they have a healthy point lead over nearest rivals Atletico Madrid.
Pique has been in typically outstanding form, so much so, having seen Valverde play him when injured in the Copa semi-final second leg against Valencia.
The Spanish international is third, behind Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in terms of playing time this season, and it is now understood that he will receive a rest.
The injury which Pique suffered during that Copa run also needs attention, seeing him have to miss half of Thursday’s training session.
On Saturday evening, Barca host Girona and it is now expected that Yerry Mina, signed in January – will play a part in that game at the Camp Nou.
Meanwhile, Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen is available, whilst Samuel Umtiti will maintain his place as the most recognised defender in Pique’s absence.
