Athletic Bilbao and Atletico Madrid found out their opponents for the last 16 of the Europa League earlier this afternoon at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon.
Athletic were drawn in arguably the tie of the round against Ligue 1 side Marseille whilst Atletico face a long trip to Russia for their second leg after they were drawn alongside Lokomotiv Moscow.
Bilbao and Marseille have met just twice before, with those two games also coming in the Europa League home and away in February 2016. The first leg of that tie in the round of 32 took place in France and is remembered for Aritz Aduriz’s unbelievable volley from 40 yards with a 1-1 draw at San Mames in the second leg seeing Athletic into the last 16.
Atleti and Lokomotiv were in the same group back in 2007/08 under the old format of the then UEFA Cup and played each other in Moscow, producing six goals in an entertaining 3-3 draw.
The first legs for these ties take place on Thursday 8th March with the second legs a week later. Atletico will be at home first before travelling to Moscow whereas Athletic will have home advantage against Marseille in the second leg.
Other notable ties from the draw include AC Milan vs Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund vs Salzburg.
