Atletico Madrid have confirmed the departures of wingers Yannick Carrasco and Nico Gaitan to Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang.
As reported on La Liga News UK on Friday (23rd), Carrasco had been set to complete a €30 million transfer over the weekend with last season’s China League One champions. The 24 year old was absent from the Diego Simeone’s squad for last Thursday’s Europa League match against FC Copenhagen as well as yesterday’s 5-2 win over Sevilla following talks between his agent and the side located in China’s Liaoning Province.
Argentinian born Gaitan had long been rumoured to leave the capital, with his agent, Jose Iribarren telling French radio station Foot Mercato in December: “Yes, he’ll undoubtedly leave Atletico”.
Iribarren continued by saying: “He has a lot of concrete offers. Nicolas was an important player when he played in Argentina, at Benfica and with the national team. He can’t continue in these conditions. If he can’t play a string of matches, nor win the coach’s trust. A player wants to play. We’re going to see with Atletico which solution we can find.”
Gaitan had signed for Atleti from Benfica in 2016 for €25 million. During his time at the club, the 30 year old made 29 league appearances, scoring three times. It is believed that Dalian agreed an €18 million fee for the player. He becomes the third player to sign for the Super League side this weekend, following Carrasco and Portuguese defender Jose Fonte from West Ham.
Fernando Torres was rumoured to be part of a deal which would have seen him join Carrasco in the Far East, however Marca have reported that he is set to stay at the Wanda Metropolitano for the rest of the season, with a domestic move at that point more likely.
