Portu scored again for Girona as they produced a superb display against Celta Vigo on Tuesday evening to gain three points.
Following on from the weekend thumping at the hands of Barcelona – Pablo Machin’s side came into the game on Tuesday as underdogs, given Juan Carlos Unzue’s improving Celta.
However, Portu, who has been a revelation this season, opened the scoring after just 14 minutes when he slotted the ball into the net from the edge of the penalty area.
Maxi Gomez, a constant threat for the visitors, almost grabbed an equaliser, but his header escaped the target and went out just wide.
Girona almost doubled their lead on the hour mark when impressive defender Jonas Ramalho headed, but his the former Athletic Club player saw his effort go over the bar.
The win sees the Catalan side move above Real Betis, whilst Celta drop, below their opponents in a mix of potential Europa League qualifiers.
Elsewhere, Real Madrid were beaten in Barcelona by Espanyol, who had Gerard Moreno to thank as he scored to end their 22-game wait for a victory over Los Blancos.
The results sees Madrid remain in fourth, two points ahead of Valencia and a massive, 14 points behind league leaders Barcelona.
