Eibar cut the gap between themselves and Villarreal to just three points with Kike’s early goal enough to see off The Yellow Submarine at the Ipurua.
The home side started brightly and managed to open the scoring inside 16 minutes, Fabian Orellana’s ball finding Pedro Leon who rolled the ball across goal with Kike arriving at the back post to slot home via the post.
That was all there was regarding goalmouth action in the first half with neither side looking entirely convincing in attack.
There was marginally more in the way of attacking play in the second half, Eibar’s best chance falling the way of Fabian Orellana but the Chilean failed to hit the target as he dragged his shot wide of the post.
Villarreal came close on a couple of occasions with Roger Martinez’s effort pushed wide by Marko Dmitrovic with the home keeper also keeping out a Carlos Bacca header.
The defeat sees the away side slip down to sixth with Sevilla overtaking them after their 1-0 win at Malaga earlier on Wednesday evening, Eibar move back up to seventh having dropped down due to wins for Girona and Getafe with Villarreal now in sight.
