Cristiano Ronaldo’s 300th LaLiga goal and a Gareth Bale opener helped Real Madrid overcome ten-man Getafe as they now turn their attentions to the second leg Champions League last 16 tie against Paris Saint Germain.
Bale, whose start marked the most La Liga appearances by a British player, struck in the 24th minute before Ronaldo put the game beyond doubt by scoring either side of Getafe’s Francisco Portillo penalty.
Loic Remy saw red for a second booking moments after the break when his arm caught the face of Madrid defender Nacho.
The win momentarily cuts the gap on La Liga leaders Barcelona to 12 and could change should their rivals beat second place Atletico Madrid on Sunday, while Getafe remain unmoved in tenth.
With a Santiago Bernabeu attendance of a little over 55,000, the home side started slowly and it was Getafe who had the game’s opening chance.
Striker Angel Rodriguez ran beyond the backpedalling Nacho on the right however his shot lacked any direction and power and goalkeeper Keylor Navas could get down low to save.
It took Real until midway through the first half to threaten, Karim Benzema dispatched an exquisite pass to the back post for Isco and the Spaniard’s knock down fell invitingly for Bale, who finished clinically into the bottom corner.
Things almost went from bad to worse for Getafe as defender Djene Dakonam almost turned Theo Hernandez’s cross into his own goal moments later, yet Madrid did double their lead on the stroke of half-time.
Again Benzema initiated the move, his perfectly weighted pass found Ronaldo inside the box and the Portuguese stepped inside before stroking the ball home.
Two minutes from the restart Remy received his second booking for catching Nacho in the face however the visitors saw a glimmer of hope when Nacho brought down substitute Jorge Molina.
Portillo made no mistake from the spot and clipped the ball past the diving Navas.
Although it was Ronaldo who had the overriding say, his 301st La Liga goal came when he rose highest to meet Marcelo’s near post cross and headed past Martinez.
Real now head to Paris on Tuesday to defend their 3-1 lead over the Ligue 1 outfit, while Getafe prepare for the visit of Levante in the league next Saturday.
