Valencia’s great season continued with a victory over Real Betis though it didn’t go without paying the price, as they lost Santi Mina through a hamstring injury.
The home side took the lead after 23 minutes when Rodrigo Moreno left footed shot went past Antonio Adan, the goal came moments after Adan had saved a shot from Goncalo Guedes.
A few minutes before halftime the hosts lost Santi Mina who had picked up an injury and he had to be replaced by Simone Zaza, Valencia had a chance to double their lead just before halftime as Rodrigo Moreno headed Jose Gaya cross but it was ultimately blocked.
After the break the home team scored again this time it was Simone Zaza who got on the scoresheet from a pass by Geoffrey Kondogbia and sent the shot to the centre of the goal.
Both sides had many chances to score but neither side could find a way to get past either keeper.
The result keeps Valencia one point behind Real Madrid with only 11 games left to play in the season while the loss leaves Betis in 9th place nine points off the Europa league spot.
Marcelino spoke of his admiration of his sides ability of not conceding. “It’s important to keep a clean sheet, because the players see some reward for their defensive work on the pitch. For me we haven’t defended differently today to other games, in the first half of the season we didn’t concede more chances than now, but we weren’t careful enough to show that hard defensive work by not conceding. For the players, the keeper and the defenders it’s a fact that confirms our stability.”
Next up for Valencia is an away trip to Sevilla on Saturday while Real Betis don’t play until Monday night against Alaves.
