Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi both had a superb weekend for their respective clubs as we look at the Hits & Flops from Round 27 in La Liga.
HITS: Ronaldo and Messi
With Ronaldo’s stuttering form in the first half of the domestic season, there have been few weeks that both players together have produced their typically brilliant performances.
But this weekend, both Ronaldo and Messi had personal landmarks they seemed determined to reach.
Ronaldo, was sitting on 299 goals prior to the weekend fixture with Getafe and his impressive brace not only saw him move past that landmark, but also hand his side a much needed win.
Messi was himself on the verge of a landmark, sitting on 599 career goals and his free-kick to beat Atletico Madrid on Sunday saw him reach that remarkable milestone.
FLOPS: Levante and Juan Muniz
The Valencia based side started the season well but form took a drastic turn in November, leaving them looking likely to be amongst those relegated to Segunda.
Leading on Sunday against Quique Sanchez Flores’ Espanyol; it was looking like Muniz’ side were on course for that long awaited victory, but an injury time goal from Leo Baptistao ensured they missed out on two vital points.
Following the game, the club made the decision to sack Muniz – a decision they reportedly made two weeks previous.
Sporting director Tito Blanco was keen to allow Muniz extra time to change their fortunes, but the dropping of points against Espanyol saw his stance change.
Les Granotes will drop into the relegation places if Las Palmas are able to beat Celta Vigo in the Monday night La Liga fixture, leaving interim boss – Paco Lopez, with a huge task.
