Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets suffered a toe injury in the 3-0 win over Chelsea on Wednesday evening and will now miss the weekend tie with Athletic Club.
The Catalan side proved too good for Chelsea in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie with Lionel Messi scoring an impressive double and Ousmane Dembele getting on the score sheet.
Barca will now be in the draw for the Champions League quarter-final on Friday morning, joining Real Madrid and Sevilla as the other two Spanish sides left in the competition.
Valverde’s side will now prepare for the weekend fixture with Athletic Club at the Camp Nou on Sunday afternoon, where they will be looking to improve on their impressive lead at the top of the La Liga table.
But, they will have to do that without Busquets, who is expected to be sidelined for a couple of weeks. The Spanish international asked to be taken off in the second half of the fixture and was replaced by Portuguese midfielder Andre Gomes.
And, tests on Thursday morning will now be undertook to determine the full extent of the problem.
Reports have claimed that Busquets will miss Spain’s friendlies against Germany and Argentina on March 23 and 27.
