Valencia 3-1 Alaves: Marcelino’s boys back into third placeMarch 17, 2018
Valencia celebrated their famous Falles Festival this weekend in style after they beat Alaves 3-1 at the Mestalla on Saturday afternoon to hold their grip on the Champions League places.
It took just 19 minutes for the home side to break the deadlock after Spanish international Rodrigo Moreno tucked away a superb team move, which involved the impressive Simone Zaza.
Los Che boss Marcelino has toyed with his strike force since the turn of the year, having signed Luciano Vietto from Atletico Madrid in January, but it was Rodrigo and Zaza, who combined well throughout the game to re-build a partnership, which blossomed towards the back end of 2017.
Alaves keeper Fernando Pacheco was constantly under threat and tried his best to keep his side in the game, producing two wonderful saves, before Italian striker Zaza got himself a much deserved goal.
Ruben Sobrino did give Marcelino some cause for concern after the half time break after he turned in Martin Aguirregabiria’s cross, but the home side re-found their two-goal advantage after Carlos Soler’s cross went in past Pacheco off defender Victor Laguardia.
Valencia now find themselves 14 points clear of Sevilla, who face Leganes on Sunday morning, whilst Alaves will now be nervously looking over their shoulder at the relegation places.
