Espanyol boss Quique Sanchez Flores has said his side were second best from the starting whistle in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Real Betis.
Flores’ men have been largely inconsistent in recent weeks, and have now moved further down the table after the defeat to the Andalusian side.
Quique Setien opted to revert back to his tried and trusted three midfielders for the visit of Espanyol and it worked wonders as they dominated the game from start to finish.
New Real Betis signing Pau Lopez, who joins in the summer, was in goal for the visitors, but he could not deny youngster – Junior Firpo’s header inside half an hour.
Midfielder Ryad Boudebouz was on the score sheet next as he sent a precise low shot past Lopez to make it 2-0 and the game was sealed by young full-back Francis, who scored with twenty minutes remaining.
“We could not adapt, from the first kick of the ball, Betis were better, ” Flores said. “We did not react to their first goal and they grew from that moment, we made too many mistakes”
Following the win, Betis remained eighth with 43 points, while Quique Sanchez Flores’ Espanyol were stranded at the 14th spot with 35 points.
The Barcelona based side will now take the international break to prepare for the upcoming league game against Alaves, before a meeting with Valencia just four days later.
