After already sealing deals, which are yet to be announced, for Espanyol goalkeeper Pau Lopez and Eibar midfielder Takashi Inui, Real Betis are closing in on a third summer signing on a free transfer.
The next man to put pen to paper is expected to be Real Sociedad’s Sergio Canales’ whose contract in San Sebastian is set to expire in the summer, when he would then move to the Benito Villamarin.
Newspaper AS say that Betis tried to bring Canales to Sevilla last summer but were reluctant to meet La Real’s asking price for a player with only a year left on his contract.
Quique Setien is a close friend of the player and his family and has long been pushing to work with the midfielder, who he feels would fit in perfectly to his style of football.
With five goals and two assists in the 2018 calendar year, Canales is in fine form and has had plenty of offers to choose from, with Real Betis now set to win the race.
Real Sociedad were still keen to get him to put pen to paper on a renewal at Anoeta, with other offers coming from across France as well as an offer from Turkish side Galatasaray.
The ex-Real Madrid and Valencia midfielder is currently sidelined by a muscle injury and is fighting to be fit for the start of a new era at La Real after Eusebio’s sacking.
