Allegri: Referee eliminated us at the Bernabeu

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri has blamed referee Michael Oliver for his side’s elimination against Real Madrid on Wednesday evening.

Juventus opened the scoring for the night  within the first 2 minutes as Sami Khedria lifted an light cross to the far post which met Mario Mandzukic’s head to put them 1-0 up.

Real Madrid then went on to enjoy large spells of possession, which led to Isco pinching the ball in the back of the net from close range; but the goal was disallowed due to him being marginally offside.

Juventus doubled their lead almost identically in the 37th minute, early substitute Stephan Lichtsteiner whipped in an inviting cross to the far post for Mandzukic to rise above Dani Carvajal and stab home.

At half time Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane brought on Marco Asensio and Lucas Vasquez for Gareth Bale and Casemiro, potentially in an attempt to reduce the impact Juve’s wide players were having in the match.

Blaise Matuidi made it level on aggregate after scoring from just a few inches from the goal line following Keylor Navas’ blunder which saw the ball fumble out of his hands and Into the Frenchman’s path.

With the game looking likely to be heading to extra time, Medhi Benatia made a rash challenge from behind on Lucas Vasquez from point blank range, which saw referee Micheal Oliver point straight to the spot.

In light of the decision the Juventus players ferociously protested to the referee and the officials which even saw Gianluigi Buffon sent off the pitch for his uncontrolled aggression and antagonism towards the referee.

The decision forced Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri to bring on Wojciech Szczesny for Gonzalo Higuain in attempt to save the penalty, Cristiano Ronaldo with the weight of Real Madrid on his shoulders side footed the ball into the side netting to send Real Madrid through to the semi finals.

“The referee whistled for this penalty, unfortunately we were eliminated for that reason,” Allegri told JTV.

“We can say that to injury time incidents, the one here and the one in Turin [a penalty not given on Juan Cuadrado], decided the qualification.

“It’s normal to be disappointed and bitter, we have tonight and tomorrow to let off steam amongst ourselves, but after that we have to think about the end of the season, the league to be won.

“Napoli are still waiting for a misstep from us, but on Sunday we have an important match [against Sampdoria] which would allow us to stay ahead of Napoli, with six games to the end.

Real Madrid will now be in the semi-final draw with Bayern Munich, Roma and Liverpool.
