Real Betis beat Girona on Friday evening to further strengthen their chances of qualifying for Europe.
The Catalan club have exceeded all expectations this season and they are still very much in with a chance of qualifying for the Europa League, however last week’s 5-0 thumping at the hands of Real Sociedad means they now sit three points outside the top six in eighth place.
Avoiding relegation was undoubtedly Pablo Machin’s main objective this season and having done that – his side seem to have taken their foot off the pedal – a little bit.
Cristhian Stuani was their biggest threat on Friday evening as he proved a tricky customer for Betis back two Mandi and Marc Bartra.
The Uruguayan striker saw himself ruled out on three occasions throughout the game for offside, having put the ball into the back of the net.
Luck was just not on Girona’s side as Loren finished off a superb move which some magic from Joaquin midway through the first half and they rallied to hold on for a massive three points which keeps them in pole position for a European place.
With the result, Betis remain in fifth place, whilst Girona are now unlikely to gain a European place.
