Deportivo La Coruna had their shooting boots on, as they ran out 3-2 victors over Athletic Bilbao at the San Mames.
Deportivo got things going after just six minutes of play from a corner, which was whipped in by Lucas Perez, and was headed across goal from the back post, and Adrian Lopez was quickest to react in the six-yard box and powered his header past Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Eight minutes later, Deportivo doubled their lead in similar fashion, in open play. A cross was whipped in via the right-hand side, and headed across the box by Celso Borges, and finished into the corner by Adrian Lopez once again, although the contact wasn’t convincing and could’ve fooled the Basque ‘keeper.
Athletic reduced the scoreline to 2-1 from a corner in the 47th minute. The corner was whipped in, and Raul Garcia was completely unmarked, left in acres of space and his header was well placed into the corner.
Six minutes later though, Deportivo restored their two-goal advantage, and once again, it was in relatively simple fashion. A low cross from the left-hand side was met by Borja Valle, who produced a wonderful finish into the corner.
In the 72nd minute, Markel Susaeta produced either a moment of brilliance or a moment of luck as his corner curled into the far post, without touching anybody, meaning he scored directly from the corner kick, giving Athletic a glimmer of hope.
Bilbao had chances to make it level, but Deportivo had their ‘keeper Ruben to thank, as he produced a couple of stunning saves to give Deportivo a crucial three points, as they look to escape the relegation zone.
