Asier Garitano continues to work miracles at Estadio Municipal de Butarque as his Leganes team ensured survival in La Liga courtesy of victory over Celta Vigo, who waved goodbye to hopes of a Europa League spot challenge in the final weeks of the season.
In a tense first half of few chances, Leganes looked the most likely to find a breakthrough as Celta Vigo struggled to make an impact despite dominating possession.
Iago Aspas enjoyed their best chance of the afternoon midway through the first period as he found space in the box to head goalwards but was firmly denied by the left hand of Ivan Cuellar in between the sticks for Leganes.
The hosts threatened on the counter and Miguel Angel Guerreo opened the scoring as he stretched furthest to get on the end of Nabil El Zhar’s cross into the box just after the hour mark.
After taking the lead, Leganes absorbed the pressure but did not rest from their counter-attacking style and continued to bombard Sergio Alvarez at the other end as the shot-stopper produced several fine saves to keep the score at just 1-0 on a disappointing afternoon for the Galicians.
