Garitano discusses safety, but wants better performancesApril 16, 2018
Leganes boss Asier Garitano has said his side are practically safe after beating Celta Vigo on Saturday, but he wants better from his side.
Garitano continues to work miracles at Estadio Municipal de Butarque as his team all-but ensured survival in La Liga courtesy of victory over Celta Vigo, who waved goodbye to hopes of a Europa League spot challenge in the final weeks of the season.
But, the Spanish coach chose to spur his team on to complete the season with the highest performance levels possible.
“We’re practically safe, but we’re not satisfied with only that,” the Coach said after the game.
“I know how difficult it is to stay up with the best teams. We have to really appreciate it, although we must keep competing at the highest level until the end of the season.
“We had a very complete game, although it’s a shame that we found it so difficult to score the first goal. The victory was fair and everyone deserves credit.
“I’m very happy for [Guerrero], he worked incredibly well and earned the reward of his goal.
“We’ve achieved the objectives that we’ve set ourselves, we’ve achieved them with great success, but there’s the bad taste in my mouth of us not going further in the Copa. We could’ve achieved more.”
In a tense first half of few chances, Leganes looked the most likely to find a breakthrough as Celta Vigo struggled to make an impact despite dominating possession.
Iago Aspas enjoyed their best chance of the afternoon midway through the first period as he found space in the box to head goalwards but was firmly denied by the left hand of Ivan Cuellar in between the sticks for Leganes.
The hosts threatened on the counter and Miguel Angel Guerreo opened the scoring as he stretched furthest to get on the end of Nabil El Zhar’s cross into the box just after the hour mark.
After taking the lead, Leganes absorbed the pressure but did not rest from their counter-attacking style and continued to bombard Sergio Alvarez at the other end as the shot-stopper produced several fine saves to keep the score at just 1-0 on a disappointing afternoon for the Galicians.
