Berizzo’s contract demands causing doubt over Athletic Club moveApril 16, 2018
Eduardo Berizzo and Athletic Club are at odds over a contract as negotiations continue to appoint the Argentine at San Mames.
The Argentinian was sacked by Sevilla in December and has been out of work since, but Athletic are now in talks to confirm him as their next manager.
According to MARCA, Berizzo has not been short of offers during his time out of the game with various offers from South America, but would prefer to remain in Spain and is in pole position for the job in the Basque Country.
However, it is now being reported that a stalemate in talks over terms has caused the move to come to a halt with the Argentine coach wanted an annual salary of €2.5m, while the club’s initial offer stood at just €1.5m.
Berizzo is currently staying at a hotel in the Basque city to continue negotiations, having flown in from South America last week.
Athletic have been hugely disappointed with their performance this season, currently sitting in 12th place and eight points off of the Europa League places with seven games to play.
Europa League elimination in the last 16 and Copa del Rey humiliation at the hands of third tier relegation battlers SD Formentera have done little to help Ziganda’s case, despite being chosen ahead of Berizzo last summer.
The coach will begin work in the summer ahead of pre-season by evaluating his squad, the B team and the rest of the league in anticipation for the 2018/19 campaign where the expectation will be that the club return to the top six with a place in the Europa League.
