With our La Liga News UK Awards starting last week with Alaves’ Player of the Season, we now take a look at Athletic Bilbao, who have had an indifferent season.
The Basque side have struggled for consistency, making it hard to select a consistent performer, however, we have whittled it down to five players, which include Inaki Williams, Kepa, Iker Muniain, Unai Nunez and Raul Garcia.
Garcia has been one of those players to keep good form, gaining an average rating of 7.06 per game and scoring eight goals. The former Atletico Madrid midfielder is the joint leading scorer, along with Aritz Aduriz, who does not make our top five this season.
Muniain makes the list to the surprise of many, no doubt. The winger was ruled out for most of the campaign but he still remains second in terms of average rating, behind Raul Garcia. Many will argue that nine appearances this season doesn’t warrant a nomination but the youngster still has plenty to give.
Kepa has been in remarkable form this season, thus prompting Real Madrid to nearly sign him in January. The young keeper has two man of the match awards this season, and has been largely faultless. Now, second choice to David De Gea for the Spanish national side, the future looks bright for the 23-year-old.
21-year-old Nunez has an average rating of 6.98 per game and has won 2.8 aerial battles per game. Whilst defensively, Athletic have not been great, the youngster has been improving throughout and deserves to be on our list.
Williams has been brilliant, leading the line in the absence of the ageing Aduriz and producing some superb displays, which have included seven league goals and five assists.
