Getafe had to play the entire second half with ten men but they managed to hold on for a 1-1 draw with Girona on Sunday.
This tie probably looked to the outsider a nothing game, but it had everything riding on it – given both clubs chances of reaching the Europa League.
Girona, who have been outstanding for large parts this season – have taken their foot off the gas recently, thus making them the least likely to play in European competition next season, whilst Getafe have been good too, producing some superb results to keep themselves in the top half of the table for the large part.
It was the home side who broke the deadlock first as Amath got himself on the score-sheet after 17 minutes – and whilst the hosts had a couple more good chances before the break, Girona did level.
Cristhian Stuani has been impeccable on loan from English side Middlesbrough and he scored just before the break to level the tie from the penalty spot.
The home side did make things hard for themselves heading into the break as Damian Suarez was sent off for that foul in the box.
The score did not change though as the home side held on for a point which puts them into the final European place in the La Liga standings.
Getafe now sit seventh, one point in front of Sevilla, who were well beaten by Levante on Friday night at the Ciudad de Valencia.
Girona, stay ninth in what has been a superb opening season in Spanish top flight for the Catalan side.
