La Liga as always was full of great goals in the season just gone, but which was the best? Well according to your votes, Valencia’s Portuguese winger Goncalo Guedes takes the award for his fantastic solo strike against Sevilla at the Mestalla way back in Jornada nine.
Each week we ran a poll on Twitter to find your goal of the Jornada with the 38 then taking part in the goal of the season competition.
From 38 to 1 wonder goal
The preliminary round cut us down to 32, getting rid of five Lionel Messi goals. Yes, five. His free-kicks against Alaves, Leganes, Las Palmas and Real Sociedad as well as his finish against Villarreal were eliminated along with Valencia’s Nacho Vidal and his goal against Real Sociedad.
With four groups of eight making up the last 32, the top two from each section made it through leaving us sixteen. Chema’s volley for Levante at home to Real Sociedad, Gaku Shibasaki with a similar effort against Barcelona for Getafe and Philippe Coutinho’s outstanding bending effort on final day for the Catalans were among those in the 16.
Damian Suarez and Marco Asensio both scored with ridiculously powerful efforts and saw their efforts in the last 16 as well.
Guedes scrapes through Quarters
After some close polls, your votes gave us a final eight of Chema, Goncalo Guedes, Marco Asensio, Lionel Messi (twice), Gareth Bale, Philippe Coutinho and Damian Suarez.
Quarter final one saw Chema and your eventual winner Guedes go head to head with the Los Che attacker beating the favourite with 56% of the vote.
Marco Asensio’s rocket against Las Palmas progressed from the second matchup, beating Lionel Messi’s goal for Barca against Athletic Club.
Messi did have one of his nine nominated strikes in the semi finals though, his inch perfect free kick against Atletico Madrid on Jornada 27 beating Gareth Bale’s El Clasico equaliser.
Tough decisions in Semis
Completing the final four was Damian Suarez with his wonderstrike in Getafe’s 1-0 win at home to Espanyol.
Onto the Semi Finals where Guedes and Asensio went head to head as did Messi and Damian. As you’d expect at this stage of a tournament, things were very tight but in the end, Guedes and Damian progressed with 53% and 52% respectively.
Perhaps surprisingly, Guedes’ goal once again defied the odds and this time, won pretty convincingly, winning by 63% to 37% against the Getafe full back.
Many people, myself included, may disagree with the winning goal but ultimately, it was decided by you La Liga fans out there and Goncalo Guedes is the winner of the La Liga News UK goal of the season.
It's time for the final now and your votes have seen the final 2 of Goncalo Guedes and Damian. See below for a reminder of the goals before you vote
