Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti has called on his club to rush through contract renewal talks before his country’s World Cup campaign begins next month.
The French international is preparing to represent his country at the World Cup in Russia next month, but has been at the forefront of contract talks at the Camp Nou.
After a solid start to last season, Umtiti lost some consistency after the winter transfer window – following claims that he could be on his way out of the La Liga club.
Manchester United have been interested in the former Lyon centre-back with boss Jose Mourinho having sent club scouts to cast a decision over a potential summer move.
Barca have been firm in their wishes to keep the young defender and talks began last month over a new and improved deal.
Whilst those talks now seem to have stalled, Umtiti has called for the club and his representatives to hurry the renewal.
‘For my part, I want to renew,’ Umtiti is cited as saying by Mundo Deportivo.
‘It’s important to resolve this issue before the World Cup although if this is not possible, it would not bother me.
‘At the moment, there is no more news or further developments.’
Umtiti, 24, is under contract at Barcelona until 2021 but his deal contains a £53million release clause – a figure which United have long been interested in pursuing.
The Frenchman has formed a solid partnership with Gerard Pique and Barca, whilst on the international scene, he is expected to start for France in Russia.
