Barcelona’s Jordi Alba hits out at club after waiting for new contract

Barcelona defender Jordi Alba has hit out at his club for making him wait 18 months for a new and improved contract.

The Spanish international is set to embark on a World Cup campaign with his country, but his agent has criticised Barca for making him wait for a new deal.

Alba’s current deal at the Camp Nou expires in June 2020, but Vicente Fores has claimed the former Valencia man has been waiting since 2016 for fresh terms.

The likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Gerard Pique have all since signed new deals, whilst the Catalan club are currently working hard to agree an extended deal for French defender Samuel Umtiti.

Alba, who last signed a contract with Barca in 2015 – was in superb form last season, having helped his side to a La Liga and Copa del Rey double.

“Raul Sanllehi (now at Arsenal) was still at the club when they told us not to worry, that they were going to call us to renew,” agent Vicente Fores told Diario Sport, as cited by ESPN FC.

“But we are still waiting. It’s been a year and a half now. We don’t understand anything, maybe it’s normal for Barca or maybe they’re not happy with the performances of a player included in FIFA’s XI and who is the defender with the most assists in European football.”

Defensive team-mate Umtiti , who is subject to a new deal – has told the Spanish champions that he would like a new deal before the World Cup campaign with his country, France, begins next month.

His talks come after interest from English side Manchester United attempted to take advantage of his release clause, said to be set at £50m –  a small fee, given his form and impact at both club and international level.
