Real Madrid have reportedly overtook Arsenal in the race to sign Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez.
The Uruguayan international has been on the Gunners’ radar for several months and with the arrival of new boss Unai Emery – that has now said to taken even more of a priority.
Arsenal scouts have identified the centre-back as the perfect man to re-build their defence and provide Emery with a starting point as he looks to bounce back following a dismal season under Arsene Wenger, who called time on his 22-year stint at the club.
The 23-year-old has a current release clause at the Wanda Metropolitano set at £53m, and it is of the assumption that Arsenal are willing to pay that amount.
However, Zinedine Zidane is keen to halt such a bid, making a move for Gimenez, as he looks to sure up his defensive options ahead of the new season.
Whilst Madrid have Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos at the heart of their defence – Zidane would ideally like to bring Gimenez to the Santiago Bernabeu and provide the duo with a solid back-up and healthy competition.
Atleti are seemingly helpless at stopping either side bid for Gimenez given his release clause.
