With La Liga News UK revealing that Antoine Griezmann is set to stay at Atletico Madrid, it is believed that Barcelona are now looking to sign Boca Juniors striker Cristian Pavón this summer.
It has been heavily reported in the Spanish press that Griezmann was set to end a four year stay at the capital for a move to the Catalan side. Following the club’s Europa League win over Marseille however, it is believed that the Frenchman has told Atleti of his desire to remain at the Wanda Metropolitano, meaning Diego Simeone will have his leading marksman ready for next season.
Argentine journalist Leo Paradizo has tweeted that Barca are already in contact with the Buenos Aires side in regard to Pavón’s availability. AS write that during an interview with Radio Continental, Paradizo revealed that it was Lionel Messi who personally recommended the 22 year-old to the club after grabbing a hat-trick against Haiti in a World Cup warm up match last month.
Pavón replaced Angel Di Maria in the second half of that match and was praised for his decision making and quickness.
This isn’t the first time Messi has been vocal in his praise for the Boca player, and told reporters after a win over Russia in November:
“With the qualities he has, Pavón could be a really important player for the national team. He’s very quick and is different to what we have in the squad.”
Pavón, who has been given the number 22 jersey for Jorge Sampaoli’s World Cup squad, had a successful season with the Argentinian Superliga champions, finishing as the league’s top assist provider with 17, as well as grabbing 7 goals in 32 appearances.
