Barcelona have confirmed the release clause of defender Samuel Umtiti is a massive €500m after he signed a new long-term contract.
The French international is preparing to represent his country at the World Cup in Russia next month, but had been at the forefront of contract talks at the Camp Nou.
After a solid start to last season, Umtiti lost some consistency after the winter transfer window – following claims that he could be on his way out of the La Liga club.
Manchester United had been interested in the former Lyon centre-back with boss Jose Mourinho having sent club scouts to cast a decision over a potential summer move.
Whilst those concerns were valid, the Catalan club have now confirmed that Umtiti put pen to paper on Monday morning, before speaking to the media.
“Samuel’s new release clause stands at €500m,” Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu confirmed to reporters on Monday after being quizzed on the deal.
The Frenchman has formed a solid partnership with Gerard Pique and Barca, whilst on the international scene, he is expected to start for France in Russia.
Whilst Umtiti has signed a new deal – Barca are still looking at Clement Lenglet, who had a consistently good season with Sevilla.
