Athletic Club are keen to bring former midfielder Ander Herrera back to the club this summer, according to reports.
The 28-year-old midfielder left the Basque side in the summer of 2014 for £28 million and is entering the final year of his contract.
The La Liga outfit hope to wrap up negotiations with the player and the club by approaching their former star with an ‘appealing’ offer.
During three seasons with Bilbao, Herrera was six games short of 100 La Liga appearances for the club, until he made his 2014 summer switch to Manchester.
Herrera has been a key figure for Jose Mourinho this season, providing the much-needed stability the manager needed following United’s sixth place finish last year.
Along with summer signing Nemanja Matic from Chelsea, the pair have provided the much needed stability in United’s midfield, allowing United’s record signing, Paul Pogba, the freedom in a more attacking role.
Despite his usefulness for squad depth and having featured 34 times in all competitions, the 28-year old’s future is in doubt with current manager Mourinho set to have a summer overhaul of his squad in a bid to close the gap on rivals and Premier League champions, Manchester city.
With Herrera moving into his final year of his contract, the Spanish midfielder will look at his options amidst an offer from his former club.
