Barcelona have announced that Robert Fernandez will be replaced by former player Eric Abidal as the club’s technical secretary.
Fernandez was behind a number of lucrative signings at the Catalan club, including Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele, but he will not continue – allowing former French defender Abidal to return to the club.
Barca thanked Fernandez for his efforts and time at the club via their official website, before confirming the news of Abidal’s arrival.
The former Barca man will be officially unveiled in his new position on Monday 18th July, alongside former Getafe sporting director Ramón Planes.
The 50-year old former scout has an eye for spotting talent, having brought in young players like Amath Diedhiou and Djené to the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez and will work alongside Abidal.
Abidal won four league titles, two Copa del Reys, two Champions Leagues, four Spanish Super Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and two FIFA World Club Cups during his six seasons with Barca.
The former French international famously battled cancer twice during his career at the Camp Nou, overcoming it on both occasions.
Since his departure as a player Abidal has maintained strong links to the club, having been heavily involved in the activities of the Barça Foundation and has turned out for the veterans’ team, Barça Legends.
