Real Betis look set for a very busy summer ahead in the transfer market. After sealing deals for Pau Lopez, Takashi Inui and Sergio Canales, they have been linked with a litany of players including; Mikel Merino, Ayoze Perez, Alex Moreno, Paco Alcacer, Beñat and Dani Ceballos among others. The newest player linked to the Andalucian club is Real Madrid’s striker Borja Mayoral.
With Ruben Castro ready to join Cordoba, a space has already been made available in the Betis squad for someone like Mayoral. This gives extra reason behind the likes of Perez and Alcacer being linked with moves to the Benito Villamarin this summer.
Mayoral was seen as a bit-part player early on this season with three-in-a-row Champions League winners Real Madrid. The 21 year old still managed to score seven goals in 24 appearances for Los Blancos however. This was a significant improvement compared to his time on loan in Germany with Wolfsburg where he managed only two goals in 21 games.
In a recent question and answer session on his official Instagram page, Mayoral spoke about being linked to a move to Real Betis:
“They are a good team with a good coach, but I have a contract with Madrid and we’ll see what happens with the new coach.”
With Real Betis facing into European football next season, Quique Setien will be looking to add further depth to their squad on top of the purchases so far. The front three positions are well stacked at present however with; Antonio Sanabria, Sergio Leon, Ryad Boudebouz, the never-aging Joaquin, Christian Tello, Joel Campbell and Loren Moron already at the club. It is also possible that he may want to offload one or two of these players to make space for Mayoral.
For Real Madrid, they first have to concentrate on confirming a replacement for outgoing manager Zinedine Zidane (expected to be Guti). They wouldn’t be in too poor a situation should they offload Mayoral to Betis either. With the 21 year old Spaniard a back-up option, they have more than enough within their squad to take his place.
Outside of the top players already available, Raul de Tomas is going back to Real Madrid from his loan with Liga 123 champions Rayo Vallecano having scored 24 goals in 32 games this season. The Madrid-born 23 year old is after showing that he is more than capable of taking over from Mayoral as being back up to Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo. With a year left of his contract, it is expected Madrid will sign him up to a new one this summer. Depending on the new manager’s plans, it looks like the back up role will be filled by either Raul de Tomas or potentially Real Betis bound Mayoral.
