Real Betis and Sporting Portugal set to swap goalkeepers

Real Betis and Sporting Portugal set to swap goalkeepers

Antonio Adan looks like he has played his last game for Real Betis, with multiple reports suggesting the Spaniard has even said his goodbyes at the club. His destination? Sporting Portugal. His replacement? Sporting Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio.

An interesting switch for Adan to make, particularly considering the current situation at the Lisbon based club. As reported HERE, six of their players have rescinded their contracts with the Portuguese giants. This has essentially made them free agents, with their prospective new clubs expected to pick up the bill in damages caused. Depending on the value of the players in question, this may work out a very reasonable transfer for the club.

Estadio Deportivo claims that the transfer of Adan to Sporting Portugal may be complicated due to the President of the club being suspended for “violating the statutes” of the club. Due to the players rescinding their contracts – including long-term goalkeeper Rui Patricio – there is a need to press on with this transfer however. On account of this, it is believed that Adan will be swapping the green and white of Real Betis for Sporting Portugal this summer in a €3 million transfer. Patricio is expected to go in the opposite direction.

For Betis, it has been accepted for a while that Adan was going to be moving to their Iberian neighbours this summer. There were a lot of question marks over who was going to replace the former Real Madrid man at the Benito Villamarin this summer, with Aitor Fernandez (currently aiming to get Numancia promoted) being mentioned. With Rui Patricio (currently on World Cup duty with Portugal) being one of their six players to have rescinded their contracts with Sporting Portugal, the decision on who replaces Adan has been made a lot easier for Real Betis.

Pau Lopez has already agreed a deal to play for Real Betis next season, but is only seen as back up. Quique Setien’s side have also been strongly linked with West Ham United’s Spanish goalkeeper Adrain. It is the Portuguese number one that is top of the list however. Coming into the club with bags of European experience will be a great benefit to Real Betis next season as they embark on their newest European journey.
