Valencia are in an interesting position as they need to both sell players to balance their books and also buy players to balance their squad ahead of Champions League football next season. The priority for now is to sell some players before the end of June. Among the names being given directions toward the exit door is Nemanja Maksimovic.
With Joao Cancelo as good as gone to Italian champions Juventus in a €40 million deal, Valencia are still wanting to increase sales to over €45 million. This is the reason why Maksimovic is being linked with an exit from Mestalla in the next week.
The 23 year old arrived at Valencia last summer in a free transfer from Kazakhstan capital club Astana. After winning the European Championship with Serbia at both under 19 and under 20, the midfielder was seen as a great prospect. After spending €2 million on Maksimovic in 2015, Astana were disappointed to lose him for nothing two years later. He did manage to win them the Kazakh league title in that time however.
It is believed there are a number of La Liga clubs are prepared to take Valencia up on their offer. The most recent club linked with Maksimovic was Deportivo Alaves. According to SuperDeporte, their sporting director Sergio Fernandez was attending some meetings with Valencia’s general director Mateu Alemany this week. Other clubs such as Espanyol, Real Betis and Getafe have been linked with moves for Maksimovic.
Not currently involved with the Serbian national team at this years World Cup, Maksimovic has accumulated five caps for his national side. Last season at Valencia, the midfielder only managed 21 appearances with six of those coming in the Copa del Rey. Should Maksimovic want to cement a place in the Serbian national team in the future, he will need more game time than he is getting at present.
Regarding the price being requested by Valencia for the Serbian, it depends when the offer will go through. Valencia want to push through any deal for Maksimovic before June passes. Should a club want him, Los Che will accept €7 million. Once June has passed however, it is believed the club are demanding a €12 million figure. In any case, Valencia stand to make a significant profit on the man they got for free last summer.
