Real Betis and Sevilla set to battle for DendonckerJune 23, 2018
Real Betis and Sevilla look set to battle each other for the signature of Belgium and Anderlecht midfielder Leander Dendoncker. According to the player’s brother and agent, Andres, both Andalucian clubs have been in contact over Dendoncker.
The agent claimed to Estadio Deportivo that the 23 year old is grabbing the attention of both Seville based clubs:
“I have had contact with both clubs … but the market is very quiet at the moment because it has just opened and it is normal for things to be quiet during the World Cup.”
Currently on national duty with Belgium at the World Cup in Russia, Dendoncker will be happy with seeing his side progress into the round of 16 with a game to spare. Yet to make an appearance in this years World Cup, Dendoncker will know that competition is stiff in Belgium’s midfield. There is so much depth in this area that manager Roberto Martinez was confident enough to leave Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan at home.
Dendoncker is reportedly valued at €15 million by the Belgian giants. Anderlecht are well known to produce high quality young players through their system. This years Belgium World Cup squad even contains 35% of Anderlecht youth products.
A lot of attention has been surrounding Dendoncker for a number of years now. Teams like Atletico Madrid, Villarreal and West Ham United have previously been linked with the 23 year old. Last season when Youri Tielemans moved to Monaco in a €25 million deal, a lot of pressure was added onto Dendoncker’s shoulders to lead this Anderlecht team. They ended up finishing in third, failing to qualify for Champions League football for next season however.
For Real Betis, they will be looking to re-invest the €30 million they are expecting to take in from the sale of Fabian Ruiz to Napoli. Spending €15 million on Dendoncker would certainly leave them with enough money to spend elsewhere in the squad also. With centre midfielders Andres Guardado and Javi Garcia both 31 years old now, Quique Setien will want to add some youth to midfield.
Having playing in both centre back, defensive midfield and centre midfield over the last number of years, Dendoncker has the flexibility to play in a number of positions which will undoubtedly suit Setien’s set up.
For Sevilla, who they will have in midfield next season is not yet set. The future of Steven N’Zonzi is unclear with Arsenal rumoured to be interested in the Frenchman. Guido Pizarro is destined to head back to old club Tigres in Mexico also and Roque Mesa’s future hasn’t been set yet either. Taking that into account, Joaquin Caparros will be wanting to add someone of Dendoncker’s ilk to the club this summer.
