Athletic Bilbao are said to have won the race with Atletico Madrid to sign Paris Saint Germain defender Yuri Berchiche.
New Athletic boss Eduardo Berizzo has been quick to look at several options to bolster his side ahead of the new season and is currently waiting on the confirmation that Yuri Berchiche has been signed from Paris Saint Germain.
The former Sevilla boss is believed to want to add depth to his new team that finished well outside the European places last season – finishing in 16th place, a full 15 points behind Sevilla and believes €20 million for Berchiche is the right option.
Whilst some reports claimed that hope had gone away due to an agreement between the defender and Atleti officials – it is now being reported that Athletic have won the race.
No details on the transfer fee are yet to emerge, and whilst Atleti are now second in line to make a move – they could still agree a transfer fee.
Another player in the plans of Berizzo is Mikel Merino of Newcastle United, however, he has been linked with Real Sociedad, who are closer to agreeing a deal.
Berizzo is now awaiting two calls on those deals and whilst Berchiche is expected to arrive at the New San Mames – a deal for Merino is further away.
